![]() ![]() The series has had three unique styles of gameplay. The second and fourth games differ in story to the aforementioned games, with two being set on Earth fighting a despot with the fourth primarily fighting an alien species as opposed to a human faction.ĭave Samuel of Volition presenting at GDC 2012 on "Communication & Iteration of Visual Effects in Red Faction" Such as, the foreign corporations that extract their resources/wealth from the planet, the Ultor Corporation (first game) and the collective world government of Earth, the EDF (in Guerilla/3rd game). ![]() The series is known for the struggle of the working people (usually miners) of Mars fighting for independence from off world oppressors. Original developers Volition have retained the rights to the series since 2020, with no updates provided on whether a future fifth game (since 2011) is in the works or may be so in the future. Originating in 2001, the Red Faction games have spanned Microsoft Windows, macOS and consoles, including the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Red Faction is a series of shooter video games developed by Volition and owned by Plaion. I'm not entirely sure it's worth trying to complete everything this game has to offer, but whatever time you spend with it is bound to be a laugh.PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, macOS, GameCube, Xbox, N-Gage, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch At its budget price, it won't burn a hole in your wallet and the current dearth of major releases is the perfect time to jump into something odd, fundamentally flawed, but still inventive and fun in its own right. Maybe it's because of the terrain and gravity on Mars but I'm hard pressed to think of a game with worse vehicle physics than this.Įven though I've spent the last few paragraphs wailing on this game, the truth is that it's still a pretty fun title. The low quality of the pre-rendered cutscenes is a given with remasters of older games but I expected the in-game visuals to be a lot better in a remaster in 2018 than they are in this game.īeing an open-world game from the last generation, Guerilla also has vehicles and my god is the driving in this game terrible. I compared the original steam version and the remaster side by side and other than some improved textures, I can barely tell the difference between the two. This is further exacerbated by a thoroughly lackluster visual presentation. It's 2018, why are we still zooming in by pressing the right stick? Why does the right mouse button do a melee attack? There are also moments where you'll have to shoot enemies in direct confrontations instead of dropping buildings on them, and the shooting mechanics never feel good regardless of whether you use a mouse or a controller. ![]() Where Red Faction: Guerilla starts falling apart at the seams is when it takes even the smallest step towards developing the story or the characters because they are rubbish. This destructibility also factors into the mission design for most of the story campaign, since most of the missions involve blowing things up. ![]() It's still quite impressive, and watching dirt and chunks of debris flying off in the direction of your hammer swing is still satisfying enough to get a few chuckles out of you. The main selling point of Guerilla is the same now as it was in 2009: developer Volition's patented 'Geomod' tech that lets you break apart everything. Set 50 something years into the future, Red Faction: Guerilla puts you in the boots of one Alec Mason (voiced by a very rough, very pre-The Last of Us Troy Baker) who has to avenge the death of a family member by taking the war to the Earth Defense Force (no, not that one) by joining the titular Red Faction and blowing up a bunch of buildings. ![]()
